The blind cow
Bumping her head on this, that tree trunk,
from old shoots on her way to the water
Comes a cow, alone. The animal is blind.
With a stone too well wrought
a boy once emptied her eye. The other one
is now clouded by a veil. The cow is blind.
She comes to the watering place just as before,
but no longer with the sure step of former times
nor with the herd: No, she comes alone.
On quiet meadows and on the banks of streams,
on rocks and hills her bells
the companions sound and graze
the grass at will ... She would fall.
The mouth bumps rudely against the hard watering trough,
she backs away injured... but returns again
and bends the head to the water, drinks leisurely.
Only a little she drinks, without thirst. Then she lifts
her horned head to the wide sky
with a tragically large gesture, raises the eyelids
over the lifeless pupils and leaves,
orphaned by light under the scorching sun,
walks hesitantly on the unforgotten paths,
moves the long tail only sluggishly back and forth.
